Declare
When I first opened it and read the first chapter, I thought it was a cold war spy thriller. In a way, that is correct even if it is not the whole story. Tim Powers do what he does best, and weaves a story created from scraps of mythology and real history. After two rather disappointing novels, it is nice to discover that he once again is back at the top, delivering some of his finest work yet.
But do not be fooled by a casual glance, this is not a normal thriller, even though the usual thriller-McGuffins are there. Pretty soon, there are supernatural beings at work, not to say a large portion of history distortion. There are some instances where it is very unlike the previous Powers novels, which is both sad and refreshing at the same time. Great book, the best I’ve read of 2001, my opinion has not waned after this reread.
