Gospel
I can't leave it alone. This is perhaps the third time I read it and it only get better each time. The characters are interesting and they surprise you all the time. Lots of bizarre ideas and weird history is thrown at the reader but these are no problem at all to accept. Books like this are hard to find in my opinion.
The book, yes. Roughly it's about a grad student who is approached by the school to tag along one of their professors who's gone awry. The alcoholic ex-Jesuit is not thrilled about having Lucy there but since the faculty won't give him any more money he has little choice. So they're off to find a lost gospel only to be pursued by CIA, mobsters and lots and lots of religious groups (both larger dominions and fringe-“heretics”.)
